READ MORE Alumni Art Installation to Light-up Times Square 1/11/2013 The Brooklyn-based design firm Situ Studio is the winner of this year’s annual Times Square Valentine Heart Design. The four partners of the group are Cooper Union alumni, including: Basar Girit, AR ’05, Aleksey Lukyanov, AR ’05, Wes Rozen, AR ’05, and Bradley Samuels, AR ’05. Using boardwalk boards salvaged during Sandy’s aftermath—from Long Beach, New York; Sea Girt, New Jersey; and Atlantic City, New Jersey—Heartwalk begins as two ribbons of wooden planks that fluidly lift from the ground to form a heart shaped enclosure in the middle of Duffy Square. The slatted construction, illuminated from within, provides varied views of the interior as visitors move around the perimeter of the installation. Visitors can enter the installation itself and literally stand in the heart of the world’s greatest city. Over the last five years, the Times Square Alliance has invited architecture and design firms to submit proposals for a romantic public art installation celebrating Valentine’s Day in Times Square. This year’s winning design, Situ Studio’s Heartwalk, will be unveiled on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, and remain on view until March 8, 2013. Read full article in the Times Square Alliance. Because a Bunch of Kids From Cooper Union Are Remodeling American Military Camo Right in the Navy Yard. By Alex Morris Published Dec 9, 2012 In early 2001, the U.S. Army decided to try installing individual air-conditioning units in soldiers’ uniforms—an idea complex enough to garner the attention of then-25-year-old Caleb Crye and 24-year-old Gregg Thompson, two Cooper Union graduates (Crye studied fine art, Thompson majored in engineering) who founded the design firm Crye Precision in a basement office in Chelsea. With no military expertise and no experience designing clothing, Crye and Thompson began studying soldiers’ uniforms and were shocked to find that few updates had been made since the Vietnam era.
